Hodgepodge 1.1.2025.

Well, even though they were both off to a late start, I guess the first day of 2025 is also a bonus blog post day! Happy first Hodgepodge of the year, friends. I'm linking up with Joyce for today's post. I'll jump right in!

1. Oxford's word of the year for 2024 is "brain rot". Are you familiar with this term? Do you suffer from this condition? Ha! This is a term used to 'capture concerns about the impact of consuming excessive amounts of low-quality online content, especially on social media.' If you were looking for a word to capture 2024 (for the nation/world, not your own life), what word would you choose?

I have heard of this term, and I have actually experienced suffering from that kind of online content. I am alone a lot, as you know, and sometimes I find myself going down these long rabbit holes watching IG reels or TikTok videos. If I had to pick a word to describe 2024, I think I would pick the word "weary" in regards to our outgoing leaders of the United States. I don't share political opinions here ever, but no matter which party you belong to, I think all of us feel the same way after four long and hard years of inflation and political unrest. I don't expect to blink my eyes and have everything be fine and dandy after the new President enters the office, but I am hopeful that at least some things can change for the better, especially regarding wars going on in other countries and also the cost of things. Case in point: I went to pick up some Taco Bell for myself the other night and spent $14 on my food, and y'all, I got one of their "meals". Taco Bell used to be where I went for really cheap food!

(Do not come at me, please, for what I just shared. These are my thoughts and opinions, so even if we disagree, let's just leave it agreeing to disagree and keep things kosher here in this kind community.)

2. It's National Polar Bear Plunge Day today...will you be participating in one of these events, or even one of your own? How will you spend the first day of this brand new year? Do you have a traditional New Year Day's menu?

I didn't participate in one of these, but I want to do this someday! I have read about how in Finland, most of the people that live there have saunas built into their homes; in the winter when it snows, they take a polar plunge into the snow (often in only their birthday suits) and then go thaw out in their indoor sauna. Supposedly there are lots of health benefits to doing this, and then you get the best sleep of your life. I'd love to do that someday! Maybe I'll have the chance to go to Finland someday and participate in that.

Doesn't this look amazing?

Here's how I spent my day: you can read about it in my first blog post of New Year's day. I've never had a traditional menu on this day, but I went to mom's house for dinner and they had made smoked sausage, dumplings, black eyed peas, turnip greens, and cornbread. It was delicious!

3. What's something that brings you joy and how will you do more of it in this new year?

Honestly, I love to read and want to do more of it in this new year. I still read a decent amount of books in 2024, but because of my inability to sit and focus on something for too long, I began a downhill trend when my life changed. I'm hoping to pick up my first love again in 2025! In order for me to read more, I just need to read more, you know? My first inclination is to watch TV instead of reading a book, so I should probably start there.

I also love to sing and prayed for opportunities to do that more as well this year. I sang in choir and on our praise team for years until I started working in the bookstore at church in the fall of 2023. Since then I haven't had many chances to sing, but I'm praying that happens this year. I don't want to waste the talent that God gave me, and I don't mean to sound conceited by saying that, but it's true that if we waste what we've been given, then we may not always have the ability and talent that we did at one time. My pastor and I talked about this one time, and he actually said those very words to me.

4. Do you struggle with the January blues? What's one thing you can/will do to keep them at bay?

I haven't always struggled with this, but I do if it snows and it sticks around for too long. I need to be with people! If I start to struggle with that this month, I will make myself get out and do things. I'm already working on that anyway, but I'll do even more if I feel myself getting down in my mood. I will say that I think I'll enjoy seeing my counselor more this month than I have in others; she will have good ideas for me if I need them, I'm sure.

5. Will you choose your own personal word of the year for 2025? What about a goal, a resolution, or maybe even a bucket list? Elaborate as much or as little as you like.

I've picked words of the year before, but I'm not doing that this year. I'm picking a Bible verse, though! Here's the one that means so much to me right now:

6. Insert your own random thought here.

I'm writing this on the night of New Year's day. I had dinner with Mom and Bill as I mentioned above, and now I'm home and comfy writing this while I watch a winter themed Hallmark movie. I am over the Christmas ones and have found all the winter ones now. I love them! I did a few things around my house today to be ready to go back to work tomorrow. I caught up on laundry, cleaned the downstairs, and straightened up my bedroom. I will probably work on cleaning my closet tomorrow night after I get off from work; it's kind of a mess right now! I would like to continue on in my streak of de-cluttering, purging, and organizing. I want to work on bookshelves this weekend and get them either donated or dropped off somewhere. Do you follow Emily Ley on Instagram? She has a great January de-clutter challenge; the first day was tackling the junk drawer.

Just a thought if that kind of thing appeals to you! Thanks for reading my bonus blog post today, friends. Love to all!

  1. I've also been praying for more opportunities to use my musical ability too. I miss being involved in the church's music regularly, but I'm very glad for the times I am invited to play on the worship team and especially when I can sing. I'll pray that doors open for you to use your gifts as well. Happy New Year!!

  2. The de-clutter challenge is a challenge for me! I love that you have a verse for the year. I am hoping we don't get a major snow this winter. Sleep well and glad you had fun with your mom!

    1. You should follow her on IG and play along with her this month! I haven't looked at today's, but I need to. I skipped the first since I cleaned that drawer out a few weeks ago. I am so hoping we don't get a big snow! Ugh. I hope you enjoyed your day!

  3. I got to my junk drawer today although it really was pretty neat. What I really need to tackle is the 'utensil' drawer which is out of control. Every time I open it to hunt for something I think about how I need to get to it but then I close it and move on. Maybe that will happen this month! I don't always have a word but I do this year. I had one in mind and did a search in my Bible for verses related to it and think I will try to memorize at least one of them. I will probably blog about it at some point. I didn't know you liked to sing. It's not a talent I was blessed with but thankfully my girls take after hubs side of the family and they're both musical, as is my hubs. My mom and I always say we'll be able to sing in heaven lol. I hope something works out for you to use that gift in the new year!

    1. I had already done my junk drawer as well! My utensil drawer could also use some attention. Maybe I'll do that one tomorrow. That's a great idea to study the verses that have to do with the word. I used to be so good at memorizing Scripture; it's not as easy for me as it used to be, though. I'm going to try to do more of that this year. I used to love Scripture writing plans, because for me to write it out help commits it to my memory. I do love to sing and have done it my whole life. I really hope for opportunities this year!

  4. I didn’t follow Emily but do now 😀 I bought her planner for 2025 without knowing she had an IG page. I love declutterring and took my junk drawer to the next level the other day and it makes me so happy

    1. 🤣 How funny that you bought her planner! I love her planners and her IG account. She featured me on her blog several years ago one time...that was before she took off with her following on socials. I love that too! It's such a great feeling.

  5. I think I could do the plunge in Finland if I could run back into the sauna! Did you watch Holiday Touchdown: A Chiefs Love Story? It was cute.

  6. So. . .I was replying to your comment on my post but didn't realize it was MY post I was commenting on - ha! So. . .wanted you to have this (I am so bad about remembering who I posted on and going back. . .unless I asked a specific questions, which I don't think you did). Anyway, I hope the following is encouraging to you:
Jennifer, may 2025 be more than you can imagine. I just watched a reel today - it was a story about how a very rich prince asked a guest for a golf lesson because he was a good golfer. Afterwards, to show his appreciation, he asked the guest what it was that he collected or something that he wanted. The guest couldn't think of anything so said, "a golf club". Days/weeks/months went by and the guest was a bit annoyed that the prince had asked him what he wanted/desired, he had told him and it seemed that his request was being ignored. Oh well. Then, one day, a package came in the mail and the guest thought, "it's about time. . .it took long enough. . .is it a custom-made gold club encrusted with jewels and that's what took so long?". No, in fact, it was a deed to a 500-acre golf course! Lesson: the Lord hears us and knows about desires we have that we don't even know we have!!! He blesses ABUNDANTLY. I will continue to pray for you, your sons, your stability, your direction, and your patience. My mother was about your age when she found herself alone for the first time in her life (she was married young like you were) and all I can say is the Lord blessed ALL of us in ways only He could. It was a story none of us even had the CAPACITY to write because our brains and imaginations are too small. Hugs and love to you in 2025!!!

    1. Thank you for that! I love that parable or story. It's so encouraging to remember that God does give to us in abundance what we need and more. How sweet of you to share about your mom; I feel like that was so rare back then! Bless her. I'm so glad her life turned out so well in spite of what went on before. I am always also encouraged by Job in the Bible, and how God blessed the second half of his life more than He had in the first. Thanks again for your ind words of encouragement!

  8. Gosh, I could see you leading a youth choir! Where did that come from? Have you ever wanted to do that?
I am not a good singer, but I sing in class everyday. I came up with jingles for remembering things. I will miss that part of teaching. I also sang to my kids all the time. Lol. Just silly things. I also made up a menopause jingle this summer and made my own kids laugh.

    1. I'd probably look into if I had the opportunity! I love teenagers and I love to sing, so it's a good match. I laughed at you singing jingles and making up lyrics specific to events...I did that all the time when my boys were young! I still do it today and even as recently as yesterday when I was singing about being so cold while I waited on the dogs outside. Um, we're gonna have to hear that one in April when we come to you!

  9. I also think you would enjoy a capsule wardrobe for going back to work - pull out some things and put them in a special area.

  10. If it's any consolation things aren't much better here in the UK when it comes to our politicians. Ugh! We've had new leaders for our country and things just seem to be getting worse.
It's a thing here on New Years day where people go for a dip in the sea, crazy! I couldn't imagine doing it. I do like the sound of having a sauna in my home though.

    1. Really! I'm glad it's not just us. I thought it was a thing there! Have you ever participated??

Happy Friday, friends! How was your week? Are you still floundering around wondering what day of the week it is? Have you resumed normalcy...
